Seton Hall Prep Announces Sterling Gibbs ’11 as Head Basketball Coach

It is with great pride and excitement that we announce Sterling Gibbs as the next Head Basketball Coach at Seton Hall Prep. Sterling, Class of 2011, returns to his alma mater after a decade of playing professional basketball around the globe. The Scotch Plains native began his collegiate career at the University of Texas before transferring and earning his undergraduate degree from Seton Hall University, and his Master of Arts in Educational Psychology from the University of Connecticut.

He was inducted into the Seton Hall Prep Hall of Fame in 2022 for his all-state endeavors on the court and currently sits second all-time on the leading scorers list with 1,984 career points. Sterling has stayed close to the program, having spent time during the 2021-2022 season on our sidelines as a volunteer assistant while recovering from knee surgery.

“Sterling brings an incredible amount of respect and basketball pedigree to our storied program,” commented Athletic Director, Larry Baggitt H’18. “We were fortunate to have Sterling volunteer with our varsity team two years ago while rehabbing an injury, and watching the way he interacted with our student-athletes impressed us all.  I am thrilled that he gets to return to The Prep.”

“I am excited to be back at my alma mater, a place where I spent such formative years,” said new Head Coach, Sterling Gibbs ‘11. I’ve had the luxury of being around the program and believe that I bring valuable knowledge to help the student-athletes grow both as players and young men. I look forward to forming relationships with my new players and colleagues, as well as reconnecting with all alumni who passionately support Seton Hall Prep Basketball.”

“In addition to his role leading the basketball program, Sterling Gibbs will be joining our School Counseling Department and aiding our Learning Assistance Program,” stated Headmaster, Michael G. Gallo ’79. “Sterling will make a tremendous impact both in the school and on the court, and I am confident he will carry out our mission in all aspects- fostering the spiritual, intellectual, social and physical growth of our students.”

Sterling is only the fourth Head Coach at The Prep since 1948 - Frank “Finn” Tracey (1948-1977), Bobby Farrell (1978-2011), and Kevin Williams (2012-2024) - and is the first alumnus tasked with leading the program. He currently resides in Bedminster with his wife Mary Halien and daughters London and Alexis.
