On September 12th, the SHP Cross Country team opened up their SEC competition at Branch Brook Park against Caldwell and MKA. Unfamiliar with the strength of conference competition this year, the SHP leaders came through the first mile in a comfortable 5:40 first mile, confidently trailing the leaders from Caldwell and MKA.  Through the 2nd mile, the Pirates, led by senior Connor Schmit, would steadily gain ground and with 500 meters to go had taken control of the race. At the finish, Schmit would win the race in a time of 17:53.  Scoring was rounded out by the strong showing of sophomores Andrew Burkitt (18:30-4th place), Ronan Carter (18:33-5th place), Nick Cirelli (18:39-6th place) and senior Ben Brennan (19:02- 8th place). The Prep would win over both Caldwell (19-42) and MKA (20-39), opening their season with a 2-0 record.
