About

The Cross Country team at Seton Hall Prep is in the American Division of the Super Essex Conference and competes on the conference, County and state levels. The team has an egalitarian spirit, for it is accessible to all who are committed and hardworking. As such, there are no cuts. Every athlete will have the opportunity to compete and, with the requisite discipline and work, will see rewarding results. No prior athletic or running experience is necessary to be a part of the Cross Country program. The program’s goal is for participants to build strength, resilience, confidence and character- and if the athlete becomes a lifelong runner, all the better.

All Varsity and JV athletes run the 5K (3.1 miles) and freshmen will run 2-mile races. Throughout the season, all athletes will run in at least eight races that are held on weekdays and some weekends. Seton Hall Prep’s Cross Country Team has become hugely popular within our community- with 5% of our student population participating on the 2015 team. Additionally, the historical success of the program hasreemerged these past two season with strong showings in the conference regular season rankings- 3rd in 2014 and 2nd in 2015.

Practices are held six days a week, unless a competition takes the place of practice. The commitment to the program does require independent work, as success in Cross Country is built upon a solid summer mileage base. Some informal practices are held through the month of July and early August in order to foster a routine, build up aerobic capacity and begin developing team cohesion. Any questions should be directed to Coach Barnitt at cbarnitt@shp.org.

Full Bio

Chris Barnitt took over as Head Coach of the Cross Country team in the fall of 2014. Coach Barnitt is a licensed social worker and has been on the faculty of Seton Hall Prep since 1993, working as a guidance counselor since 2004. He has worked as an assistant coach for Indoor Track and Outdoor Track and Field since 2010. After an early introduction to track as a Seton Hall Prep student, he became an avid distance runner in his young adult years, completing thirteen marathons since 1993. In the past two years, the program has blossomed with an impressive roster of 48 runners during the 2015 season. The harriers of the Prep finished 3rd in the conference in 2014 with a record 6-3 and 2nd in 2015 with a record of 7-2. In our Conference Championship, the Prep would finish in 6th in 2014 and 4th in 2015.

Coach Randy Schweitzer has been the Assistant Coach since 1988. Schweitzer’s Cross Country knowledge and training expertise- honed not only on the trails but as the Head Coach of our storied Swim Team- have been essential ingredients to the program’s success. Schweitzer’s tenure began under the legendary Bill Persichetty (1957-1975, 1989-1997) and continued through the successful years under Coach Steve Trembley (1998-2013).

The truest link to deep Seton Hall Prep Cross Country tradition has been Monsignor Ed Bradley, who has been the Chaplain for the team since 1966. Fr. Bradley continues to be the beloved and reliable spiritual guide for our young runners. His presence at the starting line provides us all with the spiritual grounding needed to take on the obstacles of the trail and of life.
