In February 2015, Will Korner '17, heeded the advice of his hockey coaches that playing different sports in the off season was of great importance, and volunteered at the Passaic Rowing Association (PRRA) before inquiring about starting a SHP Crew Club. There he met Joanne Victorio, Belleville High School’s Head Coach and PRRA board member who was intrigued by the idea of converting hockey players into rowers. She agreed to train the group in a special session after the spring high school season ended in May 2015.

The groups enthusiasm and enrollment prompted Victorio to find Seton Hall Prep their own coach to head this growing program. Last spring, under the direction of The Prep’s first Head Coach, Bryan Villaruel, SHP Crew sent an 8 man boat and a 4 man boat to three of the nation’s most competitive regattas. Using older, rented equipment, the SHP boats persevered to medal and win local regattas.

At the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association (Manny Flicks) on the Schuykill River in Pennsylvania, considered to be the most competitive division in the country, the Pirates placed:

Men's Novice 4+ : 5th of 22 schools
Men's Novice 8+ : 15th of 24 schools

With strong support from the Prep and crew parents, the team has acquired new equipment, trailers, and tents. The program boasts a roster of 57 athletes for the upcoming spring 2017 season. Will and Jared reported that another 20 freshmen signed up at last week’s activities fair and have expressed interest in learning to row.

SHP Crew will compete in the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association (PSRA). It is the most competitive high school rowing league in the country. The PRSA includes Don Bosco, Fordham Prep, St. Joseph's Prep, St. Peter's Prep, Christian Brothers Academy, as well as other PA/NY/NJ schools. SHP Crew is also preparing for the biggest high school rowing regatta in the world, the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, with nearly 200 participating schools.

Full Bio

Coach Bryan Villaruel has been the Head Coach of Seton Hall Prep Crew since the spring of 2016. Starting as a Novice coach for Seton Hall Prep’s first rowing team in his first season, Coach Villaruel led the team to the one of the most competitive scholastic rowing leagues in the country, the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association (PSRA). In his and the school’s first season, Coach Bryan assembled a Men’s Novice 4+ and a Men’s Novice 8+ to regional Championship races. The Men’s Novice 8+ placed in several races, notably 3rd in the Metropolitan Youth Speed Order (formerly known as Northern New Jersey Championships) in Kearny, NJ and 1st in the Overpeck Regional Youth Regatta in Teaneck, NJ. The Men’s Novice 4+ placed as well – 2nd in the Metropolitan Youth Speed Order, 1ST in the Overpeck Regional Youth Regatta, 1st in the Passaic River Sprints, 5th out of 17 schools (most of which row all year round) in the 5th Manny Flick, and leading the pack as top 3 in the state of New Jersey. As of the spring of 2017, Coach Bryan Villaruel will take over the helm as the Men’s Varsity Crew Coach in Seton Hall Prep’s first varsity crew team.

This is Coach Bryan Villaruel’s first coaching position. Previously, he rowed at Belleville High School, leading his boats to be 1st in Northern New Jersey, 2nd in the state of New Jersey, and 9th in the nation. In addition to starting the program as Head Coach of Seton Hall Prep in 2016, Coach Villaruel started the rowing program at Stevens Institute of Technology in 2012, laying the groundwork for a team that will compete and succeed in the same competitive environment as Seton Hall Prep.
