Cross Country finishes Regular Season 9-0

The SHP Cross Country team defeated Verona and Bloomfield on Tuesday, Oct. 5th, to improve to 9-0 ahead of next week's Conference Championship. 
From Head Coach Chris Barnitt '88: In an impressive show of team strength, the SHP Cross Country team charged their way to another two victories in Conference racing against Bloomfield and Verona.

Though the top runners from Verona and Nutley pushed the pace up front, senior Anthony Bottino, sophomore Connor Schmit and senior Danny Collum were gamely on the chase.

They were followed by a competitive pack of senior Ben Ferrara, senior AJ Villaruel, junior TJ Sparno and  senior Brady Sheaffer. Over the remaining 2 miles, the Pirates continued to push the pace, racing the clock and swarming the opposition topping Verona (20-42) and Bloomfield(18-45) with a 57 second compression for the top 7 runners.

Scoring for SHP were Bottino (17:20- 3rd-BB PR), Schmit (17:30- 4th- BB-PR), Ferrara (17:40- 6th- BB PR), Collum (17:47- 7th- BB PR) and Sheaffer (17:52-8th- BB-PR).

The varsity effort was rounded out by strong efforts by Villaruel (17:56- PR), senior Bedros Maldjian (18:17- BB PR), sophomore Ben Brennan (18:41-PR), junior TJ Sparno (19:11) and junior Russ Webb (19:24).

The varsity team finished off the regular season with a 9-0 record and sits atop the conference heading into next week’s competitive Conference Championship at Branch Brook Park.
