Oct. 19, 2019

GODDARD STATE PARK

The Seton Hall Prep Cross Country team showed all-around team strength as both the Varsity and JV squads placed 2nd in the Brown Northeast Cross Country Invitational at Goddard State Park in Rhode Island.

On a beautiful cool fall day tailor-made for Cross Country running, both squads knew that this would be a day to run fast against schools from New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

The Prep's grade-diverse Varsity squad would set out in a fast but controlled first mile, led by senior co-captain Colin Schweitzer (5:02) and junior Kevin Harvey (5:08).

They were gamely followed by their teammates who navigated narrow and crowded trails with the last of the team's seven passing the mile in 5:29. As they approached the hill at mile two, each raced off the top, pushed down the flats and charged through the finish in personal bests.

Schweitzer and Harvey would cross in 5th and 6th place, 15:51 and 15:55 respectively, both breaking under 16:00 minutes for the first time. Juniors Chris Gizzo and Luke Incardona gutted it out through the finish in 16:33 and 16:57 respectively. Sophomore Ben Ferrara, with a late race surge, crossed in 17:00 and would be the final scorer for the squad.

Senior Brian Phillips (17:05) and sophomore Danny Collum (17:08) would round out the varsity. The team would average 16:27 on the day. In the opening race of the day, sophomore Anthony Bottino had a bold performance leading much of the race and fighting off a late race challenge to win in a personal best of 17:27.

Junior Gabe Ferriero (PR- 18:01), senior Cristiano Ribeiro (18:31), senior Will Spies (18:35) and Paddy Sheppard (PR-18:39) would round out team scoring and contributed to the 18:15 team average.

Strong efforts were also contributed by senior Dylan Coffin (18:46), junior Mike Lazzari (18:47), senior Holden Colter (PR-21:21), and senior Ryan Surmay (PR- 21:31).

The Cross Country team now sets its sights on the Essex County Championship at Brookdale Park on Friday, November 1st, where they hope to build upon their victory at the Conference Championship two weeks ago.

SHP Alumni and Yale Midfielder Brian Tevlin Ready to Make a Big Save

March 21, 2019

SETON HALL PREP

Seton Hall Prep Alumni Brian Tevlin is doing big things at Yale, and not only on the lacrosse field.

The 2017 SHP graduate was a key contributor for Yale in his freshman season, even scoring a goal against Duke in the national championship. Heading into his sophomore season, Tevlin will be making even greater contributions off the field

Tevlin participated in a surgical process on Wednesday at a hospital near home in Livingston in hopes of helping someone in a dire situation by donating bone marrow.

Tevlin first signed up for the national bone marrow donor registry as a high school junior. A few years later, Tevlin is slated to miss up to four weeks, maybe more, of the lacrosse season as he recovers from surgery.

“I put myself in the other person’s shoes,” Tevlin said. “They’d told me it was a male in his 50s, and I thought God forbid if that was my father, and there was a college kid who only had to give up a couple of games for him to live. It seemed like a no-brainer when I said it to myself like that.”

Read the full story from The New Haven Register here: https://www.nhregister.com/colleges/article/Yale-lacrosse-midfielder-Brian-Tevlin-ready-to-13701045.php

The Prep community is praying for a full recovery for Tevlin as we continue to support his athletic and academic career at Yale.
