Virtual Reality - SHP Swimmers top Newark Academy 98-72

March 5, 2021

In a contest between what are most likely the top two teams in the Super Essex Conference, the Seton Hall Prep swim team defeated Newark Academy on March 2, 98-72.

The meet was a virtual contest with Newark Academy swimming at their own home pool and The Prep swimming at the Montclair YMCA.  With talented swimmers on both sides this figured to be an exciting meet, but one where The Prep would know what the score was until the coaches exchanged time sheets when the swims were completed.

In the first event, the 200 Medley Relay, the SHP four of Jaeden Yburan, Connor Townson, Richard Poplawski and Joaquin Quezada went 1:39.42, which won the event. Dylan Negron followed with a win for SHP in the 200 Freestyle in 1:50.63. Event 3 featured Poplawski, The Pirates freshman star, who swam an excellent time of 1:56.29, but this was not quite good enough as defending County Champion Ali Elmasry won the event in 155.92 for Newark Academy.

Jack Devilbiss then captured the top spot in the 50 Freestyle in a quick 21.92 seconds. This gave the Prep a lead on paper of 37-25 at the break - although they did not know that in the virtual setup.

SHP star Jaeden Yburan won the next event, the 100 Butterfly, in a time of 53.13, edging Newark Academy's Owen Markowitz by .03. Newark Academy's Ryan Kim got a narrow victory of his own in the 100 Freestyle, topping Devilbiss 49.82-50.11.

Poplawski won the 500 Freestyle easily in 4:47.61, but Newark Academy took 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, making the score 61-49 in favor of SHP with 4 events to go.

The SHP 200 Free Relay Team of Quezada, Cormac Rouse, Negron, and Devilbiss won their race in 1:34.32, and Yburan next picked up his second win, taking the 100 Backstroke in 53.92, and the Prep led 80-60 with 2 events to go.

Then in the 100 Breaststroke, Townson wowed his teammates and coaches with a personal best time of 59.58 - only to find out later that he had been defeated by Elmasry, who went 59.40.  The SHP 400 Free Relay Team of Poplawski, Negron, Devilbiss, and Yburan closed out the meet with a win in 3:20.17.

The virtual format brought a strange new dynamic.  Newark Academy swam in the afternoon, and The Prep heard through the grapevine that they had swum extremely fast, breaking four school records. Thus the Pirates knew that had to be good as they swam in the evening; meanwhile, some Newark Academy swimmers watched the livestream of the Prep's races set up by the SHP parents to see how their own swims stacked up!

Given how close many of the times were, this would have been a very exciting head-to-head matchup, but SHP is happy with their performance and victory.  The Prep will have a few head-to-head matchups later in the season.  The next meet is another virtual meet, on Thursday March 4 vs. Glen Ridge.

Hockey Program Celebrates 50th Anniversary

March, 2021

The Seton Hall Prep Ice Hockey program was officially launched in 1971 at the request of President Msgr. Michael E. Kelly '57, who still attends games 50 years later; but the program's history goes deeper than just these last 50 years.

From 1923-1924, The Prep had a hockey team that played at Cameron Field in South Orange; in the late 1930s, the program was rebooted, playing games at the Brooklyn Ice Palace. The team only played there for a couple of years.

Msgr. Kelly saw how many of our students wanted to compete, and he shared a mutual love for the game. In particular, the Sullivan Family was very active in the hockey community. Msgr. Kelly joked that he started the program for Pat Sullivan, a student who was so passionate about the sport that Msgr. Kelly wanted him to play for The Prep.

Fast forward to the winter of 1968, and Msgr. Kelly would take a group of students to South Mountain Arena around midnight to hit the puck around with them. It was well worth the $25 an hour they paid to reserve the time on the ice.

A year later, The Prep formed a Club Hockey Team, which Pat Sullivan would play for. By the 1970-1971 school year, the SHP Hockey Team became a varsity sport, coached by Pat's older brother Dan Sullivan and assisted by Mike Bufo.

The team played at Branch Brook Park in Newark and South Mountain Arena. In the first half of the season, they competed against every team in the NJ Interscholastic Hockey League. In the second half, teams were broken down to the “A” or “B” Division according to their record. The Prep won the “B” Division that season, beating Chatham Boro in the finals. As a result, SHP was placed in the “A” Division the following season.

In 1972, John Warchol took over as head Varsity Hockey Coach with Michael Bufo remaining on board as his assistant. Dan Sullivan also continued to help out the coaching staff.

In the late 1970s, SHP was placed in the Gordon Cup Division where the team competes to this day.

Today, The Prep offers Ice Hockey on the Varsity and JV levels, competing in the Gordon Division of the NJIHL, the Gordon Cup, and the NJSIAA State Tournament.

Since 2004, the Hockey program has won the Gordon Division twice, the Gordon Cup once, and achieved the highest honor in NJ high school hockey in 2004, winning both the NJSIAA Non-Public ‘A’ State Tournament and the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions.

The Pirates call Codey Arena home, a facility just a mile up the road from Seton Hall Prep. The program is currently led by Head Coach Mike Atkinson, who has been at the helm since 2015. He's assisted by John Warchol and Kevin Crane.

We thank all of our current and former Pirates who dedicated so much of their time and effort toward the program. We wouldn't be where we are today without these contributions.

Swim Team Opens with a Win; Poplawski sets School Record

Feb. 28, 2021

The Swim Team opened the season with a 125-42 victory over MKA on Friday, February 26, in the first “virtual swim meet” in school history.

In a virtual meet, each school swims in their own pool with a referee present; they then compare the times swum to determine the winner. This is a special accommodation this season due to COVID-19.

The season got underway with the 200 Medley Relay Team of Senior Jaeden Yburan, Junior Connor Townson, and Sophomores Vince Wong and Aidan Liwanag winning in a time of 1:43.81.

This set the stage for the debut of highly touted freshman Richard Poplawski, who dazzled in his first swim for the school, setting a new school record in the 200 Freestyle in a time of 1:42.85. This broke the previous mark of 1:43.66 set by Justin Dunn in 2014.

Individual race winners also included Sophomore Kyler Alcebar in the 200 IM (2:09.60), Freshman Cormac Rouse in the 50 Freestyle (23.32), Vince Wong in the 100 Butterfly (56.19), Connor Townson in the 500 Freestyle (5:05.01), Freshman Patrick Miller in the 100 Backstroke (1:01.24), and Aidan Liwanag in the 100 Breaststroke (1:06.97).

The Prep also won the other relay events, with the team of Junior Dylan Negron, Junior Dom Ancey, Kyler Alcebar, and Richard Poplawski winning the 200 Free Relay in 1:36.53 and the team of Cormac Rouse, Junior Jose Rodriguez, Jaeden Yburan, and Senior Jack Devilbiss winning the 400 Free Relay in 3:29.78.

SHP looks to have a very formidable team this year, led by co-captains Jaeden Yburan and Jack Devilbiss, with a very talented freshman class joining accomplished upperclassmen.

The Prep’s home pool this year is the Montclair YMCA. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions there can be no spectators, but the meets will be livestreamed at

Cross Country places 2nd in Sectional Final

Nov. 15, 2020

The Seton Hall Prep Cross Country team placed 2nd, led behind a dominate 1st place finish by Kevin Harvey '21, in the Non-Public A North Sectional race at Garrett Mountain on Sunday, Nov. 15.

After a required two-week break that resulted in SHP missing the SEC Conference Champiosnhip, The Pirates were excited for the opportunity to race again.

The following from Head Coach Chris Barnitt:

From the gun, the Pirates were aggressive in gaining position as they headed into the woods navigating rugged terrain.

Senior co-captain Harvey led the charge trading the lead with St. Peter’s top three runners.

He was supported by the aggressive efforts of senior co-captains Chris Gizzo and Luke Incardona, junior Anthony Bottino, sophomore TJ Sparno, junior Ben Ferrara and junior Danny Collum.

By the 2nd mile Harvey had broken away from his pack and took the long uphill Garrett finish alone having gapped his opponents. He would cross the line with a decisive 1st place finish in 16:16, the fastest time on Garrett over two days of Sectional competition.

As the remainder of the team clawed their way up the hill they fought hard for position.

Gizzo would comfortably crack the top ten in 7th place in a time of 17:15.  Incardona (15th, 17:39), Bottino (18th, 17:48) and Ferrara (20th, 17:54) would round out the scoring for the Pirates followed by Sparno (18:07) and Collum (18:18).

Swimming Ends Season in Record Breaking Fashion

March 2, 2020

The SHP Swim Team finished its season with an outstanding performance at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions, placing in the finals in four events and breaking three school records in the process.

The star of the meet for SHP was Junior Jaeden Yburan, who finished 3rd in both of his individual races, breaking his own school records in the process. Earlier this season, Jaeden had broken the oldest school record on the books in the 200 Individual Medley; the previous record had been set by future Olympian Ron Karnaugh in 1984 at 1:55.12.

Jaeden would lower the mark further to 1:53.60 in the preliminary round on Saturday, and then smash that mark with a stunning time of 1:51.99 in Sunday's final. Jaeden has been the school record holder in the 100 Backstroke since his sophomore season, and he lowered his record time to 50.51 in Sunday's final.

Yburan would then be part of a third school record, as the Prep 400 Freestyle Relay team set a new mark of 3:11.76 as they finished fourth in Sunday's Final.

The four new record holders are Junior Jack Devilbiss (48.67), Senior Matt Prior (48.29), Senior Mike Pietrucha (48.10) and Yburan (46.70). The previous record of 3:12.89 was set by the 2014-15 team featuring Justin Dunn, Colby Dixon, Mike Pietrucha's older brother Jack, and Connor Mailley, grandson of school nurse Emmelyn Mailley.

The 200 Medley Relay team of Yburan, Pietrucha, sophomore Dylan Negron and Devilbiss also excelled at the meet, finishing 6th in a time of 1:36.90.

Also representing the Prep at the meet were junior Joaquin Quezada and sophomores Connor Townson and Jose Rodriguez.

The team enjoyed a very successful season, ending with a 12-2 dual meet record, having won the SEC/Essex County Championship Meet, and having advanced to the NJSIAA Non-Public A Semifinals.

Swimming advances to Semi Finals

Feb. 11, 2020

In a meet featuring intense emotions, a record setting performance, and an incredble comeback, the SHP Swim Team tied with St. Peter's Prep 85-85 on February 10 at the Yanitelli Center Pool at St. Peter's University, and advanced based on winning the first tiebreaker.

The meet began with some controversy in the first event, the 200 Medley Relay. The SHP A relay had a slight edge going into the anchor leg, and then many believed that the St. Peter's A relay freestyler had left the blocks early and disqualified, but there was not dual confirmation from officials as required, and St. Peter's edged SHP 1:38.14 to 1:38.19. Combined with a third place finish by their B relay, St. Peter's took a 10-4 lead, and then extended the lead to 21-9 with a strong 1-3-4 performance in the 200 Freestyle.

The third event, the 200 Individual Medley, featured a duel between each team's strongest swimmer, with SHP's Jaeden Yburan matched up with SPP's Gabriel Orbe. Yburan would prevail 1:54.26-1:54.44. Yburan's time set a new school record in the event, the oldest record on the school list, with the previous record of 1:55.12 set in 1984 by future Olympian Ron Karnaugh. Connor Townson and Dom Ancey took 3rd and 4th in the event as well, and the Pirates pulled to within 6 at 26-20.

St. Peter's then went on a run of 5 events where they gained either 2 or 4 points in each event, and they led 72-52 with only 3 events remaining. While things looked dismal for Seton Hall, strength in the late events has been characteristic of the team all season, and this meet proved to be no exception. The Pirate comeback began in event 9, the 100 Backstroke, as Yburan, Ancey, and Joe Labrador pulled off a 1-2-3 finish which cut the lead in half to 75-65. Townson would then take first in the 100 Breaststroke, and with Vince Wong finishing third and Jack Amoreno finishing 5th, SHP trailed 81-75 going into the last event, the 400 Freestyle Relay. This meant that the meet would be a tie if SHP finished 1st and 3rd. The SHP foursome of Dylan Negron, Jack Devilbiss, Matt Prior and Yburan took first easily in 320.18, and as the race unfolded both St. Peter's A and B relays were battling to the finish with the Seton Hall B squad, with 3 possible outcomes depending on the order of finish. The three relays would only be separated by .21 seconds, and with the SHP B relay in the middle, the meet was tied 85-85.

The first tiebreaker is power points earned in the meet according to the standard established by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. This sytem assigns power points based on overall speed, and the Pirates prevailed, 4284-4195.

SHP advances to the semifinals and will face # 1 seed CBA in the semifinals on the Presidents Day Holiday at 530 PM at the Raritan Bay Area YMCA in Perth Amboy.

Swimming Advances in State Tournament

Feb. 6, 2020

The SHP Swim team won their first-round meet in the NJSIAA Non-Public A State Tournament with a 99-71 victory over Notre Dame High School on Thursday, Feb. 6, at NJIT.

The 5th-seeded Pirates got off to a solid start with a 1-3 finish in the 200 Medley Relay for a 10-4 lead, with the foursome of Jaeden Yburan, Connor Townson, Dylan Negron, and Michael Pietrucha winning the race in 1:42.04.

The two teams would split the points in the 200 Freestyle, but SHP would go 1-3-4 in the next two races to take a 40-22 lead, with Yburan winning the 200 IM and Pietrucha winning the 50 Freestyle.

Any thoughts that the Pirates might coast to victory were cast aside however as a spirited Notre Dame squad finished 1-2-3 in the 100 Butterfly to cut the lead to 43-35.

Pietrucha would win the 100 Freestyle to head-up a 1-3-4 Pirate finish in the 100 Freestyle, but Notre Dame would bounce back with a 1-3-4 finish of their own in the 500 Freestyle, leaving SHP with a 59-51 lead after 6 events.

SHP would get the momentum back in the 200 Free Relay with a 1-3 finish to stretch the lead to 69-55, with Jack Devilbiss, Jose Rodriguez, Matt Prior and Mike Pietrucha taking first in 1:32.51.

SHP Alumni and Yale Midfielder Brian Tevlin Ready to Make a Big Save

March 21, 2019

Seton Hall Prep Alumni Brian Tevlin is doing big things at Yale, and not only on the lacrosse field.

The 2017 SHP graduate was a key contributor for Yale in his freshman season, even scoring a goal against Duke in the national championship. Heading into his sophomore season, Tevlin will be making even greater contributions off the field

Tevlin participated in a surgical process on Wednesday at a hospital near home in Livingston in hopes of helping someone in a dire situation by donating bone marrow.

Tevlin first signed up for the national bone marrow donor registry as a high school junior. A few years later, Tevlin is slated to miss up to four weeks, maybe more, of the lacrosse season as he recovers from surgery.

“I put myself in the other person’s shoes,” Tevlin said. “They’d told me it was a male in his 50s, and I thought God forbid if that was my father, and there was a college kid who only had to give up a couple of games for him to live. It seemed like a no-brainer when I said it to myself like that.”

Read the full story from The New Haven Register here:

The Prep community is praying for a full recovery for Tevlin as we continue to support his athletic and academic career at Yale.
